Sipi Falls
is one hour away from Mbale town, nestled in a beautiful mountain village. We
headed out early Saturday morning and arrived at the tip of the hike around midday.
The descent was very tricky. We slipped and slid down a narrow dirt path until we
reached the base of the first waterfall. The ascent was MUCH worse as it was
nearly completely vertical all the way back up. I tell you, there is no such
thing as switchbacks here. Its just up, up, and up. We reached the top and were
dead, yet the hoard of kids that managed to follow us all the way down and out
hadn’t drinken or eaten a thing… and were not breathing hard. It was a cake
walk for them. I felt like such a fat, lazy American.
As we waited
for a Taxi to take us home we found a house that served Chippatti, beans, and
rice. As we ate and conversed with the locals I was overcome with such a feeling of love. It was one of those moments were I saw completely outside myself. I viewed myself sitting at that table, eating foreign food, talking with new friends, amid an utterly humble setting...and felt so content. I’ve never felt so
at home in a place so far away. I can’t shake this feeling. I
love this culture, people, and place. Uganda has my heart.
what a beautiful hike!! don't think i could do it...did those kids just follow you guys up?! so fun!
